I recently made the decision to leave corporate life after 20-years and many deadline stress attacks later to join the small business community. Here is how the journey began.
When is an idea a great business idea?
My idea for a business developed over the years after listening to clients, small business owners, business news, social media, etc.., then developed into the "what ifs". What if my idea does not self, no one gets it? What if I can't learn how to make videos for tic toc and Instagram? What if my best efforts and intentions are not good enough? Did you know inventions like the pet rock, anger room and chicken rental supposedly made millions? I believe my idea is just as sane at those inventions.
Is becoming a business owner a good decision?
I know my vision is ready for the world, and how it's the best thing since slice bread, but will others? How do I share that vision with the small business community, will they buy in? Most of all, business planning, decisions, good and bad days are all me, no more days off. Then I made a list of life in the corporate world, I was still responsible for planning, performing and executing tasks with no "real" control over the future of the business. The one guaranteed benefit is a paycheck and the security that the business risk was on the shoulders of others. Working for others, looks like its winning, but your vison, impact and control over your future to tethered to others.
Am I actually ready to put my name on the door?
It's not actually my name on a real door, these days consulting is mostly virtual. I have decided that my idea was good and will help many, just by doing what I have done for over 20 years. The risk of "potential failure" outweighed the smiles, joy and pride of making my own way. I realized that taking the step into entrepreneurship was the best decision for me at this time. If Mr. Potato Head brought joy to millions, helping one of the fastest growing business sectors in the U.S. achieve and sustain their dream has to measure up.
I did a thing, and here I am, a business owner, making decisions, navigating the curves, planning the next steps, most of all helping small business owners plan and develop their future. While the start of my journey was summed up in this short message, the real thing is not short and concise. It's a thin line between entrepreneurship or not, depends on your tolerance, dedication and stamina for the business owner world. My journey started with the thought, "What if small business owners were given a chance to learn what they didn't know?"
To entrepreneur or not is a self-discovery journey, but if you should contact me, let's talk.
